The museum has been open since 1956, making it one of the older institutions of its kind in the region. It is housed in a building near the market square of Stary Sącz, a town whose own history goes back to the medieval period.
The museum takes its name from Seweryn Udziela, a 19th-century ethnographer who devoted his life to collecting folk customs and oral traditions from this part of Poland. Inside, wooden icons, embroidered textiles, and objects of religious folk art show how the people of this area expressed their daily life and beliefs.
The museum sits near the market square in the center of Stary Sącz and is easy to reach on foot from most of the town. Opening hours vary by season, so it is worth checking before you go, and groups should book in advance.
The museum holds a display dedicated to Ada Sari, whose real name was Jadwiga Szayer, a woman who grew up in Stary Sącz before becoming an internationally known opera singer. It also features a reconstruction of the childhood room of philosopher Józef Tischner, who was born in this town.
