Monument to John Paul II and Ronald Reagan, Memorial statue in Przymorze Wielkie, Gdańsk, Poland
The Monument to John Paul II and Ronald Reagan is a bronze sculpture standing in Ronald Reagan Park in the Przymorze Wielkie neighborhood of Gdańsk. The two figures are shown walking together, the pope in his robes and the president in a suit, as if caught mid-conversation.
The idea for the monument came from the Godność (Dignity) association in Gdańsk, whose members included former Solidarność activists and political prisoners. It was donated to the city on July 14, 2012, as a gesture of gratitude for the support Poland received during a difficult period.
The monument shows John Paul II and Ronald Reagan walking side by side, based on a photograph taken in Miami in 1987. Three marble plaques nearby explain the context and carry the words "Poles Grateful for Independence".
The monument stands along a path in Ronald Reagan Park and is easy to spot while walking through. The park has wide paths and is open to all visitors at any time.
In 2013, vandals cut off Ronald Reagan's arm from the sculpture. The arm was later found at a scrap yard, and the statue was repaired and returned to its place.
