Domaine de la Burthe, Park in Floirac, France
The Domaine de la Burthe is a public park and leisure area on the heights of Floirac, near Bordeaux, covering around 70 acres (about 28 hectares) of forest, meadows, and sports facilities. It sits on a limestone hillside shared between the towns of Floirac, Cenon, and Bouliac, giving the terrain a gently sloping shape.
The estate dates to the 18th century, when wealthy Bordeaux merchant families, including the Balguerie Stuttenberg family, kept country properties here. The town of Floirac bought the land in 1973 and gradually turned it into a public leisure space, replanting around 450 trees after the storm of 1999.
Within the domain stands an outdoor shelter called La Belle Étoile, a large yellow metal star with five arms, each designed as a sleeping space. It was created by an artist and allows visitors to spend a night in the open air, surrounded by the trees and the sky.
The domain can be reached on foot, by bike, or by tram, with the Floirac Dravemont stop nearby. Bikes are not allowed inside the park itself, but racks are available at the parking area to leave them before entering.
The domain hosts a micro-farm where hundreds of varieties of fruits, vegetables, and flowers from around the world are grown. The produce is sold directly to visitors and schools, making the park an unusual place to learn about food and nature at the same time.
