Peanut Island Park is a small man-made island in the Intracoastal Waterway near the Lake Worth Inlet in Riviera Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida. The island has sandy beaches, a snorkeling lagoon, picnic shelters, camping sites, a fishing pier, and a paved path that runs around its perimeter.
The island was formed in 1918 from the soil dredged during construction of the Port of Palm Beach, piled up in the water as work on the port progressed. A plan to ship peanut oil from the site in the 1940s never went forward, and that failed venture left the island with its name.
Peanut Island is a favorite stop for boaters along this stretch of the Florida coast, especially on weekends when boats anchor just offshore and people jump into the water. A path around the island passes mangroves, coconut palms, and a small lagoon where snorkelers can spot fish close to the surface.
The island is only reachable by boat, either by water taxi from Riviera Beach Marina or by private vessel. Visitors should bring all food, drinks, and gear with them, as there are no vendors or rental services on the island.
Beneath the island sits a nuclear bunker built in 1961 for President John F. Kennedy to use during his stays in Palm Beach. The bunker, officially known as Detachment Hotel, is currently closed, but its entrance can be spotted from the outside.
