Palm Beach County, Administrative county in Southeast Florida, United States
Palm Beach County is an administrative area in southeastern Florida that reaches from the Atlantic coastline to the wetlands surrounding Lake Okeechobee. The landscape shifts from densely developed coastal towns to open agricultural fields inland.
The county came into existence in spring 1909 when northern communities separated from Miami-Dade and made West Palm Beach the administrative seat. Before that, pioneers like Henry Flagler had pushed development along the coast with his railroad line.
The region maintains 192 different nationalities among its residents, with multiple languages spoken throughout its educational institutions and communities.
Visitors exploring the coastal towns will find well-maintained beaches and parks, while the western area features quiet country roads and nature reserves. Summer months bring regular afternoon showers, so waterproof clothing is a good idea.
The Herbert Hoover Dike encircles the southern edge of Lake Okeechobee and was built following the 1928 hurricane that killed several thousand people. This earthwork is now one of the longest levees in the United States.
