Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge
Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Palm Beach County, United States.
Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is a large nature reserve in the northern Everglades ecosystem with sawgrass marshes, tree islands, wet prairies, and swamp areas. The property offers multiple ways to explore: paved walking trails, canoe routes through the water, and bike paths along edges, together with boat ramps and observation towers at several locations.
The refuge was established in 1951 to protect migratory bird species and received its current name in 1986 to honor a conservationist who spent decades working to preserve southern Florida wetlands. This founding was part of a nationwide effort to protect wetlands and stopover habitats for traveling birds.
The walking paths show how different habitats connect, and you will notice birds behaving differently in open sawgrass areas versus densely wooded zones. From the observation towers, you can see how the land has been shaped by water flow and seasonal changes that sustain countless plant and animal communities.
Visitors should be prepared for insects, especially during humid months, and wear water-resistant or quick-drying clothing if using canoe routes or trails near water areas. The grounds are accessible by foot or car, with parking available at multiple entrances and different starting points for various activities.
One area of the property, Strazzulla Marsh, contains one of the largest remaining cypress swamps in the region and is fed mainly by rainfall instead of other water sources. This uncommon forest type has nearly disappeared from the region, making this location important for its protection.
