Old School Square, Schule in den Vereinigten Staaten
Old School Square is a historic campus in Delray Beach, Florida, featuring early 20th-century school buildings that have been transformed into cultural venues. The 6-acre site includes the Cornell Art Museum, the Crest Theatre for live performances, and an outdoor pavilion stage for concerts and festivals.
The elementary school opened in 1913, and a high school building was added in 1925 to serve the growing community. After both schools closed by the late 1980s and the buildings fell into disrepair, the city and local historical groups worked together starting in 1987 to restore and repurpose them as a cultural center.
Old School Square served as the heart of community life for many decades, where generations gathered to learn and celebrate together. Today, the restored campus continues this tradition by hosting art exhibitions, theater performances, and local events that bring people together.
The grounds are easy to walk through with outdoor paths connecting the museum, theater, and pavilion stage throughout the campus. Plan your visit around specific events or exhibitions, as different activities happen at different times during the year.
The very first school serving African American students was built in the late 1800s in what is now Linton, a thatched-roof structure that preceded the current campus by decades. This early history reveals how education took root in the community long before the surviving historic buildings were constructed.
