Saltworks Museum, Ecomuseum in Le Grand-Village-Plage, France

The Écomusée du Port des Salines is an ecomuseum and museum in Le Grand-Village-Plage, on the Île d'Oléron in the Charente-Maritime region of France. It is set along an old port and spread across several wooden cabins, each dedicated to a different aspect of salt harvesting on the island.

Salt production on the Île d'Oléron goes back many centuries, when the island's salt flats supplied a trade network that reached far along the Atlantic coast. The museum was created to keep that memory alive and to document how the role of the salt worker changed over time.

The sauniers, the salt workers of the island, have passed down their craft from one generation to the next, and their work is still visible today on the salt flats nearby. An exhibition called "Made in sel" shows visitors how many everyday objects contain salt, often in ways that are easy to overlook.

A visit typically takes between 45 minutes and an hour, which makes it a good fit for all ages and paces. Children have their own trail through the museum with questions, puzzles, and memory games that make the experience easier to follow for younger visitors.

The museum is designed to engage all the senses: visitors are invited to touch, smell, and listen, not just to look at displays. A short film also explains how the daily work of the sauniers shifts completely depending on the season, showing just how much the job depends on weather and tides.
