Espace Monet Rollinat, Museum in Fresselines, France

The Espace Monet Rollinat is a small museum in the village of Fresselines, in the Creuse department of France, dedicated to Claude Monet, Maurice Rollinat, and contemporary art. The interior is light and open, with rotating displays of paintings, photographs, documents, and objects that trace the work and visits of both artists.

In the late 19th century, Fresselines attracted artists drawn to the light and colors of the Creuse valleys, among them Claude Monet, who spent several weeks there in 1889. The museum was created later to keep this memory alive and to honor both Monet and the poet Maurice Rollinat, who also lived in the region.

The Espace Monet Rollinat celebrates the connection between two well-known figures, the painter Claude Monet and the poet Maurice Rollinat, both of whom were drawn to this corner of the Creuse valley. The exhibitions change regularly and include contemporary works alongside pieces that echo the artistic legacy tied to this place.

The museum is open from early April through mid-November, mostly in the afternoons, and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It is a good idea to arrive with enough time to also walk around the village, as the river path nearby pairs naturally with the visit.

During his stay in Fresselines, Monet painted a series of canvases showing the Creuse valleys under different light conditions, an early version of the series approach he would later use for his haystacks and Rouen Cathedral. The same quality of light that caught his attention then can still be seen today when walking along the river.
