Pont Charraud, Historic road bridge in Crozant, France

The pont Charraud is a stone road bridge in the village of Crozant in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France, spanning the river Sédelle on three semicircular arches. On the upstream side, the piers have triangular forebays, while the downstream side features trapezoidal ones, each topped with a small half-sphere ornament.

Construction of the bridge began in 1603 and was not completed until 1695, reflecting how long such projects could take in that era. It was officially listed as a historic monument in 1934, giving it formal protection.

The name Charraud has been part of daily life in Crozant for centuries, and the bridge is still used as a road crossing today. A local legend says a mason made a deal with the devil to finish the work in a single day, a story that locals still tell with a smile.

The bridge sits on road RD913 in Crozant and can be reached on foot or by car without difficulty. Visiting in daylight is a good idea, as the natural light brings out the texture of the old stonework.

The bridge is only about 12 feet (3.80 meters) wide, which means vehicles must cross one at a time with care. This narrowness gives modern drivers an unusually direct sense of how tight old road infrastructure could be.
