Crozant

Crozant is a rural commune in Creuse that sits between two rivers and is surrounded by forests and rolling countryside. The village contains medieval castle remains and benefits from a landscape shaped by water and woodland terrain.

A castle was built in the 13th century and shaped the area for centuries before suffering damage during 16th-century conflicts. The ruins that remain today are remnants of this turbulent period in local history.

Painters arrived in the 19th century to capture the river landscapes, with Armand Guillaumin becoming one of the most notable artists drawn to the area. The dramatic terrain and light conditions created an appealing setting that artists found worth documenting.

A large lake created by a dam offers water activities and outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the warmer months. Spring and summer provide the most pleasant conditions for visiting and exploring the surrounding woodland and water features.

A botanical garden here features an impressive collection of rare trees and plants from around the world. A renowned gardener shaped this space to showcase diverse plant species that visitors often overlook when exploring the area.
