Creuse, Administrative department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Creuse is an administrative department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, composed of hilly terrain, woodlands, and small settlements across the interior. The administrative capital Guéret sits centrally among different rural communes and larger towns such as La Souterraine and Aubusson.
In 1790, this territory formed during the French Revolution from parts of the former province of La Marche. Over the 20th century, many residents left the countryside to move into urban regions.
This region remains known for its medieval fortresses and stone architecture that mark the rural landscape in many communes. Aubusson continues to act as a center of textile arts, offering workshops where visitors observe traditional techniques in action today.
The area consists of hundreds of smaller communes spread across two districts and mostly connected by rural roads. Travelers who want to reach the different towns should use a vehicle and expect longer driving times.
With only a few inhabitants per square kilometer, this region counts among the least populated areas in France. Wide fields and forests shape large sections where you rarely encounter other people.
