Millevaches En Limousin, Regional natural park in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Millevaches En Limousin is a protected natural park spanning three departments of Nouvelle-Aquitaine across granite plateaus that rise between 400 and 1,000 meters. The landscape includes wetlands, forests, and moors distributed across numerous municipalities.
The park project was initiated by regional leaders in the 1980s and officially established by government decree in 2004. This creation reflected growing concern for protecting the natural landscape for future generations.
The territory maintains traditional ways of living with cattle and sheep raising that shape the landscape. Handcrafted trades in building and food production remain woven into daily life here.
The park provides maps and guides for an extensive network of walking paths through different landscape types. Proper footwear matters here since the terrain alternates between boggy and wet areas.
Since 2021, the area holds recognition as an International Dark Sky Reserve with exceptionally clear starry skies. This makes it a special place for stargazing anywhere in Europe.
