Ducal castle of Gavray, Medieval castle ruin in Gavray-sur-Sienne, Normandy, France

The Château ducal de Gavray is a medieval castle ruin set on a sandstone and puddingstone hill in Gavray-sur-Sienne, in the Manche department of Normandy. Still visible on the site are a round tower dating from the early 12th century, a square keep from the 15th century, a cistern, and sections of wall with stones several feet (about 2 meters) thick.

The site goes back to the late 11th century, with a document from 1091 mentioning a fortification at Gavray, then tied to the duchy of Normandy and later to the kingdom of England. Fought over repeatedly during the Hundred Years War, the fortress slowly lost its role after the English left in 1449 and was largely dismantled in the 17th century.

A Norman banner still flies at the top of the site, recalling the medieval origins of the place. Alongside it hangs a flag bearing three leopards, the symbol of England, marking the long period when the region was under English rule.

The site sits on top of a hill, so reaching it requires a short walk up that most visitors will find manageable. It is worth checking opening conditions in advance, as guided tours and events are offered on a seasonal basis.

Archaeological digs that began in the 1980s revealed that parts of the fortress were still in use well into the 17th century, long after it had officially lost its role. The site was also once said to be connected to other parts of town through underground passages, though none of these can be accessed today.
