Schongau Castle, Castle in Schongau, Germany

The Château de Schongau is a medieval castle in the old town of Schongau, a town in Bavaria, Germany. It features thick stone walls and small towers that once formed part of the town's defensive system.

Schongau grew into a trading hub during the Middle Ages, sitting on routes between Italy and Germany, and the castle helped protect the town during that period. A major fire in 1493 destroyed much of the upper town, but the site was rebuilt in the years that followed.

The Château de Schongau sits in the old town and gives visitors a sense of what the town looked like when trade made it prosperous. The stone walls and towers are still visible and easy to walk around.

The castle is easy to reach on foot from Schongau's town center, as it sits within the old town. Walking through the surrounding streets gives a good view of the walls and towers from multiple angles.

In 1331, Schongau was granted the right to mint its own coins, which was an unusual privilege for a town of its size. This shows how much weight the town carried along the trade routes of the time, and the castle was central to maintaining that authority.
