Schongau

Schongau is a medieval town in upper Bavaria that spreads across the Lech valley between larger regional centers. The settlement clusters around its walled historic core with narrow lanes and town squares at its heart.

The settlement relocated from its original site to the current location in the 13th century near an ancient trade route. The town developed as a fortified commercial point and has retained that defensive layout to the present day.

The completely intact defensive walls form a rare unbroken ring around the old town and clearly show the former trade route that passed through this point. Walkers can circle the entire perimeter and trace the original defensive strategy.
