Gallipoli Mevlevihanesi, Ottoman mevlevihane in Gelibolu, Turkey

The Gallipoli Mevlevihanesi is a house of prayer and dervish lodge from the Ottoman period, located in the Hamzaköy coastal area of Gelibolu, Turkey. The complex groups a domed prayer hall, a sema hall used for the whirling ceremony, a shrine, a tomb, and a large entrance gate, all built in plain Ottoman stonework with red-tiled roofs.

The mevlevihane was founded in the early 1600s by Ağazâde Mehmed Hakîkî Dede, a religious leader who settled in Gelibolu after years of travel and established a Mevlevi order lodge there. The building went through several restorations over the centuries, including a major repair in the mid-1800s, before being acquired by the Turkish Vakıflar General Directorate in 1994 and opened to visitors in 2005.

The mevlevihane belongs to the Mevlevi order, known for the sema, a spinning dance performed by dervishes as part of their spiritual practice. The large domed hall used for this dance still has its original proportions, with plain walls and traces of old calligraphy that give a sense of how the space was once used.

The site sits in the Hamzaköy area near the coast of Gelibolu and can be reached on foot, though the path may involve a short slope. Modest clothing is recommended as it is a religious site, and visitors should allow enough time to walk through the different parts of the complex at a relaxed pace.

During the military threats that Gelibolu faced over the centuries, the mevlevihane was used at times as a storage space for weapons and ammunition, showing how religious buildings could take on very different roles in times of crisis. It was also counted among the 15 major dervish lodges in the Ottoman Empire that served as places of spiritual training, which set it apart from smaller local institutions.
