Gelibolu Savaş Müzesi, War museum in Alaeddin Mahallesi, Gelibolu, Turkey
Gelibolu Savaş Müzesi is a war museum in the Alaeddin Mahallesi neighborhood of Gelibolu, a coastal town on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. It displays original equipment, uniforms, weapons, maps, and personal objects recovered from the surrounding battlefields of World War I.
Gelibolu stands close to the Gallipoli peninsula, where one of the bloodiest campaigns of World War I took place in 1915, as Ottoman and Allied forces fought for months over control of the strait. The collection was built over roughly 15 years and first shown publicly at the Topkapi Museum before finding its home here.
The personal belongings on display, such as shaving sets, toothbrushes, and bowls with names carved into them, bring daily soldier life into focus. Walking through the rooms, visitors experience the war not as a distant event but as a series of small, human moments.
The museum sits on Kore Kahramanlar Caddesi and is easy to reach on foot from the town center, making it convenient to combine with other nearby historic sites. It is not open every day of the week, so checking the schedule before planning a visit is worth the effort.
A large part of the collection was gathered by a single collector, Onur Akmanlar, and includes original handwritten letters and diaries left by soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Texts of this kind, written in the soldiers' own words, are among the rarest objects in the region.
