The Ferris wheel at Poelaert Square, Ferris wheel and viewpoint in Brussels, Belgium

La grande roue de la place Poelaert is a ferris wheel set on a large open square in central Brussels, right next to the Palais de Justice. It rises to about 180 feet (55 meters) and its cabins, which can each hold up to 8 people, rotate slowly so passengers can take in the view in all directions.

The wheel was installed in September 2019, brought to Place Poelaert by René Bufkens, a former fairground operator who spent years in the amusement business. He chose this square because its elevated position already made it one of the best natural viewpoints in the city.

The wheel at Place Poelaert has become a meeting point for locals and visitors alike, especially on summer evenings when the square fills with people. Its lights draw crowds who linger on the esplanade long after their ride is over.

The wheel runs daily from morning until late evening, though it may stop in case of strong wind or storms, so it is worth checking conditions before heading out. One of the cabins is designed to fit wheelchairs and strollers, making the ride open to everyone.

Each winter, the wheel is temporarily moved to Place Sainte-Catherine, where it becomes part of the Christmas market. This means the ride can be enjoyed at two different spots in the city depending on the season.
