Chapelle Saint-Cado, Church in Auray, Brittany, France

The Chapelle Saint-Cado is a small stone church set on a hillside in Auray, in the Brittany region of France. The building has a modest layout with a tiled roof, narrow windows, and a carved doorway that shows a mix of late Gothic and early Renaissance decoration.

The chapel was built in the 16th century on the site of an older church that dated back to the 12th century. Over the following centuries it was listed as a protected monument, ensuring it would be maintained for future generations.

Once a year, a Pardon dedicated to Saint Cado draws local people together for a morning of communal prayer, keeping alive a tradition rooted in Breton religious life. Outside this celebration, the chapel occasionally hosts concerts by local music students, giving the stone interior a rare animated quality.

Parking is available nearby, and visitors reach the chapel by walking up the hill on foot. It is worth checking in advance whether the chapel is open, since access to the interior is not guaranteed on every day. The Journées du Patrimoine offer a good opportunity for a guided visit.

The floor of the chapel contains funerary stones belonging to the Cadoudal family, who once owned the building and held a prominent role in the area. These stones are set into the ground and are easy to miss, yet they are among the oldest readable traces left inside the building.
