Romsdalseggen, Hiking trail in Rauma, Norway
Romsdalseggen is a ridge hiking trail in Rauma, Norway, starting near the town of Åndalsnes and running for roughly 10 miles (16 km). The route crosses open terrain, rocky slopes, and a narrow ridge, with chains fixed to the steepest sections to help hikers move safely.
Romsdalseggen was used for generations by local people as a route through the mountains, long before it became a hiking trail. Over time, mountaineers and then tourists discovered the area, leading to the marking of the route and the installation of fixed chains on the steepest passages.
Romsdalseggen is widely known in Norway as one of the country's most celebrated ridge walks, drawing hikers from abroad as well as locals. On the ridge, strangers often stop to share snacks or point out landmarks, creating a natural sense of community high above the valley.
Most hikers take a bus from Åndalsnes to the trailhead and then walk back down to town at the end of the route. Trekking poles are a good idea, especially for the steep stone steps on the descent, and the trail should not be attempted when wet conditions make the rock slippery.
From the ridge, hikers get a direct view of Trollveggen, Europe's highest vertical rock face, which rises almost straight up from the valley floor directly across. At the Nesaksla point, the old Eggen restaurant has a large window that looks straight down over Åndalsnes, making it a popular final stop before the descent.
