Torre atalaya de artillería y vigilancia, Historic watchtower and artillery site in Cádiz, Spain

The Torre atalaya de artillería y vigilancia is a historic watchtower in Cádiz, Spain, standing at the end of Cortadura beach on a small protrusion that forms a tiny bay called La Albufera toward the sea. The stone tower has nine sides and was surrounded by a semicircular battery and a moat, designed to protect both the sea and land approaches.

The tower was built in the early 1600s, likely on the remains of an older watchtower and tuna fishing station known as the almadraba de Hércules. Over the centuries it was reinforced several times, most significantly during the French invasion, when a perimeter moat was added and its artillery defenses were expanded.

The Torre atalaya de artillería y vigilancia once stood at the center of a coastal signaling network, where fires and smoke were used to pass warnings from tower to tower. This chain of communication connected several points along the coast and allowed messages to travel quickly over long distances.

The site sits within a military testing area called the Polígono de Experiencias, so public access may be restricted. It is worth checking access conditions before visiting, as parts of the structure may not be freely open to visitors.

Between 1805 and 1820, the tower was equipped with a visual telegraph: two movable arms on a mast sent coded messages to military authorities in Cádiz. A few decades later, a civil telegraph line was added that connected all the way to Madrid.
