National Museum and Research Center of Altamira, National archaeological museum in Santillana del Mar, Spain

The National Museum and Research Center of Altamira is an archaeological national museum in Santillana del Mar, Spain, dedicated to the prehistoric cave paintings of Altamira. It combines a full-size cave replica with exhibition halls displaying tools, bones, and stone objects from the Paleolithic period.

The Altamira cave was discovered in 1879 and its paintings were doubted by scientists for decades before being accepted as genuine in the early 20th century. The museum first opened in 1979, then expanded in 2001 with a new building designed by architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg.

The Neocave is a full-size replica of the Altamira cave, showing its paintings of bison, deer, and horses on the rock surface. Walking through it gives a direct sense of how early humans chose and shaped the walls to tell their stories.

The museum sits right next to the original cave on the edge of Santillana del Mar, and it is easy to reach on foot from the town center. The cave replica draws large groups, so booking ahead is a good idea, especially during summer months.

The museum building was designed so that natural light enters through the roof in a way that echoes the dim, enclosed feeling of a real cave. The Neocave replica was made by specialists using the same mineral pigments and hand techniques that Paleolithic artists used around 15,000 years ago.
