Oga Peninsula, Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, Japan

Oga Peninsula is a peninsula in the Sea of Japan, extending westward from the Akita coast in northwestern Honshu. Its coastline alternates between steep cliffs, small fishing ports, and rocky formations, while forested hills cover the interior.

Oga Peninsula has been home to fishing and farming communities for many centuries, with people drawing their livelihood from the sea and the surrounding land. Structures like Akagami Shrine's Goshado, built during the Edo period, reflect how long settlements and local beliefs have been rooted here.

The Namahage tradition is what most visitors associate with this place: at New Year's, men dressed as demon figures in straw costumes and masks go from house to house, calling out to children. Museums on the peninsula keep this custom alive year-round, so visitors can encounter it outside of the winter season.

A car is the most practical way to get around the peninsula, as the main spots are spread far apart along the coast and hills. Visitors arriving by train on the Oga Line from Akita can find rental cars and local bus options near Oga Station.

At Unosaki Beach, a rocky formation exposed at low tide casts a silhouette at sunset that locals compare to Godzilla, giving it the nickname Godzilla Rock. Photographers gather there each evening to catch the moment the light changes over the water.
