Amami Marine Aquarium & Museum, Public aquarium in Amami City, Japan
The 奄美海洋展示館 (Amami Ocean Exhibition Hall) is a public aquarium in Amami City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The round white building near the beach displays fish, corals, and sea creatures native to the waters around Amami, with informative panels in Japanese and, in some areas, other languages.
The hall was built to bring the ocean life of the Amami islands to the general public. Over time, its displays were expanded to better represent the rare and locally specific species found in the surrounding waters.
Inside, visitors can try making crafts from shells and coral-inspired materials in a hands-on workshop area. This activity reflects how closely the people of Amami are connected to the sea in their daily lives.
The building is within walking distance of a bus stop and also easy to reach by car, with free parking available on site. After the visit, the nearby beach is a short walk away and makes for a natural continuation of the outing.
The round shape of the building is unusual for a public aquarium and makes it easy to spot from the road along the coast. Walking around the outside, visitors can already see into some of the exhibits through the large windows before entering.
