Uradome Coast, Coast in Iwami, Japan

Uradome Coast is a rugged shoreline in Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture, stretching from Cape Kugami to Mount Shichiyama as part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark. Along its roughly 15 kilometers (9 miles), the land features steep cliffs, sea caves, small oddly shaped islands, and stretches of white sandy beach backed by pine trees.

The coastline was carved over a very long time by the waves and winter storms of the Sea of Japan, which gradually hollowed out caves, shaped cliffs, and separated rocks from the mainland. The area was later recognized as a national scenic site and natural monument, and it became part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark when that was designated by UNESCO.

The closest train stop is JR Iwami Station, and buses run from there to the shore, though not on a constant schedule, so checking times in advance helps. Boat tours of the coastline run from March to November, and the hiking trails along the cliffs can be done in around two hours.

The pine trees growing on the coastal rocks are stunted by the wind and salt air, giving them the look of small bonsai trees balanced on the cliff edges. At the port, local shops sell squid ink ice cream, a dark-colored treat that has become a signature snack of the area.
