Hangungminsokchon, Outdoor museum and theme park in Yongin, South Korea
The Korean Folk Village (Village folklorique coréen) is an outdoor museum in Yongin, South Korea, dedicated to showing daily life during the Joseon period. It brings together hundreds of original hanok houses with tiled or thatched roofs, gathered from different regions of the country to represent various social classes of the past.
The village was founded in 1974 to preserve the traditions and architecture of the Joseon period, making it one of the first projects of its kind in South Korea. Over the decades, new activities and seasonal events were added without altering the historical character of the site.
Throughout the day, visitors can watch performances of traditional music, dance, and theater, as well as a re-enacted wedding ceremony with colorful costumes. They can also try on hanbok, practice archery, or join in old folk games like Yutnori.
The site is large and well signposted, but comfortable walking shoes are recommended since visitors cover a lot of ground on foot. From Seoul, the village can be reached by bus or train to Yongin, with a direct shuttle running from the nearest station.
The village has served as a filming location for many Korean historical dramas, including Dae Jang Geum and Queen Seon Deok, and costumes from these productions are still displayed on site. Visitors can take photos in re-created scenes from these shows at designated spots around the grounds.
