Yangyang Surfyy Beach, Surf spot and beach in Yangyang, South Korea
Yangyang Surfyy Beach is a surf spot and sandy beach on the east coast of Korea, in the town of Yangyang, Gangwon-do. The beach is dedicated to surfing and divided into a surf zone and a separate swimming area to the south, each watched over by lifeguards.
The beach opened in the summer of 2015, after its owners went through a long process of negotiations with local officials and the military, which had previously controlled access to the area. Its opening marked a turning point for surfing in Korea.
Surfyy Beach is one of the places where Korea's surf scene has taken shape, and visitors can feel that in the water and on the sand. Surfers are expected to follow a clear etiquette: wait your turn, don't cut others off, and keep things respectful.
The beach is easiest to reach by taking a bus from Seoul to Yangyang and then a short taxi ride to the shore. Summer weekends draw large numbers of visitors, so arriving early in the morning or on a weekday makes for a calmer experience.
The beach displays art made from plastic waste collected on the shore, placed where visitors walk past it every day. Signs around the beach ask people not to smoke or leave trash, making environmental care a visible part of the visit.
