Hajodae Beach, Sand beach in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, South Korea
Hajodae Beach is a long sand beach in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, on the northeastern coast of South Korea. The shore slopes gently into the sea, and nearby cliffs, a lighthouse, and small rocky islets sit just off the coast.
The stretch of coast around Hajodae was once a quiet fishing area where local communities depended on the sea for their livelihood. Over time, it drew more visitors and grew into one of the more popular seaside spots on the east coast of Korea.
The Hajodae Pavilion, counted among the Eight Scenic Sights of Yangyang, sits on a rock right above the sea and draws visitors who come to look out over the water. A skywalk extends from the pavilion over the coastline, letting people walk above the rocks and waves below.
The beach gets busy in summer, so arriving early in the day helps find a good spot on the sand. Parking is available close to the shore, and the site stays open around the clock, which makes it easy to visit at sunrise or late in the evening.
Two streams, Gwangjeongcheon and Sanguncheon, flow into the sea right near the beach and make the water slightly warmer than at other spots along this coast. Behind the sand, a pine forest offers shade for camping and picnics even when the beach itself is packed.
