Bogildo Yun Seondo Historical Site, Historic garden in Wando, South Korea
The Bogildo Yun Seondo Historical Site is a garden from the Joseon period on Bogildo Island, in Wando, South Korea. It includes old trees, ponds, stone features, and restored buildings such as the residence Nakseojae and the pavilion Seyeonjeong.
Yun Seon-do, a scholar and poet of the Joseon period, moved to Bogildo Island in the mid-17th century to escape political turmoil on the mainland. He laid out this garden and lived there for more than a decade, writing some of his best-known poems.
The pavilion Seyeonjeong sits on a hill overlooking a pond and the surrounding islands. Visitors sit there and look out over the water, much as Yun Seon-do once did.
The site is on Bogildo Island, which is reached by ferry from Wando. Allow enough time to walk through all three areas of the grounds at a relaxed pace.
Dongcheonseoksil is a small pavilion built on a cliff directly above the sea, one of the few spots on the grounds that looks out over open water. Yun Seon-do used a natural spring there in the rock to drink fresh water.
