Castle Garden, Park in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Castle Garden, known locally as Burggarten, is a park on the edge of the old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, built on the site of a medieval castle. It has open lawns, flowerbeds, walking paths, and terraces overlooking the Tauber Valley and the rooftops below.

The castle on this site was built in 1142 by the Hohenstaufen family and served as a center of power for the ruling dynasty of that era. An earthquake in 1356 destroyed much of it, and the stones were later reused to build the town walls of Rothenburg.

The garden has stone figures representing the four seasons and the four elements, set among geometrically shaped flowerbeds. These sculptures date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are still a central part of the space today.

The garden is just a short walk from Marktplatz, at the end of Herrngasse, and signs throughout the old town point the way. It is free to enter and open daily, though access may be restricted on certain evenings during special events.

A column erected in 2010 honors the Hohenstaufen dynasty, whose castle once stood on this very ground. Nearby, a pogrom stone marks the violent events of 1298 against Rothenburg's Jewish community and is part of a guided tour of the town.
