Fırtına Creek, Creek in Rize Province, Turkey

Fırtına Creek is a river in Rize Province, in northeastern Turkey, rising in the Kaçkar Mountains and flowing into the Black Sea just west of Rize town. It runs roughly 68 kilometers through forested valleys and small villages, crossed at several points by old stone bridges built during the Ottoman period.

The valley around this creek has been home to local communities for centuries, who used the water for farming and fishing. The many Ottoman stone bridges built along it show that it once served as a key route for traders and travelers crossing the region.

The name Fırtına means storm water in Turkish, which reflects the fast and powerful flow of the stream. Local villagers have fished in its waters and used the old stone bridges for generations, and this daily connection to the creek is still visible today.

The creek is open year-round, with most visitors arriving in the warmer months for hiking and rafting. Sturdy shoes are a good idea since the paths along the water can be wet and slippery, and a light jacket is useful almost any time of year given the rainy Black Sea climate.

Some of the Ottoman stone bridges near Çamlıhemşin were built without mortar, held together only by the weight and fit of the stones. They have stood for centuries in spite of the strong current and regular floods that come with the rainy season.
