Brno Reservoir, Water reservoir in Brno-Bystrc and Brno-Kníničky, Czech Republic.
Brno Reservoir is a water storage area in the districts of Brno-Bystrc and Brno-Kníničky, spread over a large surface and held back by a concrete dam. The water reaches depths of up to 23 meters in some places, and the shore alternates between wooded slopes and accessible sections with swimming areas.
Construction of the dam began in 1936 and led to the entire village of Kníničky being flooded to make room for the water reservoir. Work was completed in 1940 and has since secured the water supply for the city of Brno.
The reservoir takes its name from the Bystrc district and now serves as a popular spot for water sports and weekend recreation. Sailboats and windsurfers use the open water surface, while walkers and cyclists follow marked paths along the shore.
In summer, excursion boats run between the port in Bystrc and Veverská Bitýška, offering a round trip on the water. The shore paths are mostly easy to walk, and several spots are suitable for swimming or picnics.
Inside the dam is a small hydroelectric plant that contributes to the region's power generation. The facility has been operating for decades, using the height difference between the reservoir and the river course.
