Brno Zoo, Animal park at Mniší hora, Brno, Czech Republic
Brno Zoo is an animal park located on Mniší hora hill that houses over 200 species spread across sloping grounds. The site features spacious enclosures for polar bears, tigers, monkeys, and hoofed animals from many regions.
The zoo opened on August 30, 1953, becoming an established part of Brno's cultural landscape. Over the decades it grew in scope and joined the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the early 21st century.
The zoo serves as a gathering place where city residents can observe animals from around the world and connect with nature. School groups regularly visit to learn about different species and understand why protecting wildlife matters.
You can reach the zoo by trams 1 and 11 or buses 50, 52, and 54 from the city center. Plan for a full half day of walking since the grounds are hilly and spread out over the landscape.
The Tiger Rocks pavilion uses natural rock formations as its setting instead of recreating a typical jungle environment. This design approach shows how modern zoos adapt animal habitats to more closely mirror what the animals experience in nature.
