Mariánská Týnice, Baroque abbey in Mariánský Týnec, Czech Republic
Mariánská Týnice is a former Cistercian abbey with a church featuring two symmetrical towers and a prominent dome. The structure displays baroque architectural language with elaborate details crafted by Jan Santini Aichel.
Construction started in 1711 under Abbot Eugen Tittl on the site of a pilgrimage chapel that existed since the 12th century. The abbey subsequently became an important center of monastic life in the region.
The complex now houses a museum and gallery displaying regional art collections and historical objects from northern Plzeň. Visitors can see local craftsmanship and artistic works that shaped life in this area over the centuries.
You can explore on foot, walking through the grounds, viewing museum displays, and visiting the restored church. Plan enough time depending on the season, as classical music concerts are held throughout the year.
The building's dome collapsed in 1920 but was fully reconstructed around 2000, restoring it to its original baroque splendor. This restoration made it a noteworthy example of modern reconstruction techniques.
