Javořice, Mountain summit in Mrákotín, Czech Republic

Javořice is a granite mountain summit in the Vysočina Region that rises to 837 meters and represents the highest point in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. A television and radio transmitter station has stood at the peak since 1989, visible from surrounding areas.

The first structure on the summit was a simple cabin built in 1925 as a refuge for hikers. Between the 1920s and 1980s a surveying tower and later an aviation beacon served as lookout points. The current 166-metre transmitter dates from 1989, and plans for a new observation tower have been raised repeatedly, including by politicians Josef Herbrych in 2018 and Josef Pavlík in 2022.

The summit lies on the line of the main European drainage divide, which runs across the southern slope, and on the old border between Moravia and Bohemia. The writer Vlasta Javořická took her pen name from this mountain and set stories here, including the collection Pod horou Javořicí.

Marked trails reach the summit from Světlá (2 km), Studená via the yellow then green trail (7 km) and Telč via the red trail (12 km). A green trail runs 3 km from the car park by Velký pařezitý rybník. The transmitter compound at the top is fenced and closed to the public.

The mountain is made of moldanubic rocks formed through sedimentation in an ancient Precambrian sea, now displaying crystalline slates, gneiss, and quartzite. These ancient stones tell the story of a time before modern continents took shape.
