Kroměříž Castle

Kroměříž Castle is a former bishop's residence in the Czech Republic with a large art collection and extensive gardens surrounding the main building. The structure mixes Baroque elements with older architecture and functions today as both a museum and event venue.

The site began as a Gothic structure in the 15th century but suffered significant damage when military forces attacked the region during the 1600s. After these events, builders transformed it into the Baroque building that stands today.

The Picture Gallery reflects how princes and church leaders used this place to show their power and good taste through art. You can see paintings displayed in rooms that were built specifically to hold them.

You can visit the main building and the gardens separately or together, and it is wise to plan time for both. The paths are well marked and accessible, but wear sturdy shoes since the grounds spread over a large area.

Inside the castle is a hall with a painted ceiling showing light triumphing over darkness, created by a master artist in the 1700s. This fresco work is easy to miss if you do not take time to look up at the ceiling.
