Mlýnská brána, Medieval city gate in Kroměříž, Czech Republic
Mlýnská brána is a medieval city gate in Kroměříž constructed from stone with features typical of fortified structures, including a prominent tower and reinforced walls. The structure combines solid defensive design with decorative elements that remain visible today.
The gate was constructed as part of the city fortifications and provided access to important facilities such as the mint, mill, and brewery located beyond the city walls. By the 19th century, other original gates of the city had been demolished while this one survived.
The gate displays preserved fragments of early Baroque painting on its facade, reflecting the artistic contributions of Bishop Karl II of Liechtenstein to the city. These visual marks show how religious leaders shaped the appearance of Kroměříž.
The gate is located within the city and is easily accessible on foot, making it a natural stop during a walking tour of the area. Visitors should note that access can vary depending on the season and any ongoing maintenance work.
Among the original city gates, this is the only one to survive the demolition wave of the 19th century, while others were destroyed. Its preservation makes it a rare witness to the city's original defensive layout.
