Rychnov Castle, Baroque château in Rychnov nad Kněžnou, Czech Republic

Rychnov Castle is a four-winged baroque building around a square courtyard, with a lower wing enclosing a stable court. Its south facade has two lower connecting wings with mirror-image clock towers and a tunnel passage to the Kněžna stream. The main facade and the other wings are topped by mansard-roofed lanterns.

A fortress of the royal chamberlain Heřman of Rychnov stood here before 1258; the brothers of Rychnov sold it to the Pernštejns in 1497. After 1640 the Kolowrat family took over, and from 1676 they built an early baroque château near the Church of the Holy Trinity. A fire in 1704 led to the 1720–1724 remodelling attributed to Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel.

The castle's picture gallery, founded in the 18th century, holds works by Karel Škréta and Hans von Aachen alongside the Kolowrat family portraits. Visitors can also see a collection of 18th-century firearms and original Kolowrat furniture, and the castle houses a library with a manuscript collection.

The castle stands on a sloping plateau above the Kněžna stream in the northwest of the town, about 32 km east of Hradec Králové. The Museum and Gallery of the Orlické Mountains and the picture gallery are open to the public; the Kolowrat family still owns the estate, so check opening times before visiting.

The castle's picture gallery, begun in the 18th century, holds works by Karel Škréta and Hans von Aachen, alongside a collection of 18th-century firearms and original Kolowrat furniture. The Kolowrat family recovered the estate in restitution in 1992; the present owner is Jan Egon Kolowrat Krakowský Liebsteinský.
