Valtice Castle, Baroque residence in Valtice, Czech Republic
Valtice Castle is a baroque residence in southern Moravia featuring ornate facades, multiple wings, and formal gardens laid out in geometric patterns. The structure was expanded and modified over the centuries to create the complex visitors see today.
The site began as a simple defensive tower in the 11th century and gradually developed into the grand residence of the Liechtenstein family. The family left after World War II, and the state took ownership and opened it to the public.
The castle served for centuries as the cultural center of the Liechtenstein family, and the rooms show how they lived and what art they valued. The furnishings and decorations reflect the tastes of a wealthy noble family across different periods.
Access to the interior is by guided tour only, which takes visitors through approximately twenty rooms showing how the family lived. Check ahead for tour schedules, as they vary seasonally and availability depends on current conditions.
Beneath the castle lies one of the largest wine cellars in the Czech Republic, dating back to the 15th century. This underground space has stored and produced wine for generations, revealing a hidden side of the estate that few visitors expect.
