Ervěnický koridor, Railway embankment between Most and Chomutov districts, Czech Republic
The Ervěnický koridor is a railway embankment spanning former mining land between Most and Chomutov districts. It carries railway lines, main road I/13, and the Bílina River, bridging a significant height difference created by years of mining subsidence.
Construction began in 1983 and took six months to complete. The project was built to reconnect the landscape destroyed by open-pit mining and to carry traffic over the subsided terrain.
The embankment reconnected communities that were separated for decades by mining operations. Today it shows how the region has moved beyond its mining past and rebuilt broken connections.
The best views of this embankment come from the side or below, where its true scale becomes apparent. The site is easily accessible by public transport since the railway and road run directly across it.
This embankment ranks among the world's highest railway structures and combines infrastructure with landscape restoration in a remarkable way. Trains operated at reduced speeds through the 1990s as the ground continued to settle beneath it.
