Helfštýn

Helfštýn is a castle ruin situated on a hilltop near Týn nad Bečvou, with structures spread across multiple courtyards at different levels. The complex displays defensive walls, towers, bastions, and several gates that illustrate the layout of medieval military architecture.

The fortress was founded in the early 14th century and later served as a key defensive position during regional conflicts. The Pernštejn family carried out major renovations in the 16th century, significantly changing its layout and defenses.

The castle draws craftspeople who create metalwork during annual gatherings, with their creations displayed in exhibition spaces throughout the complex. These pieces reflect different artistic traditions and techniques practiced across Europe.

The site is accessed via pathways that lead uphill to the castle, with varying terrain throughout the complex. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and expect uneven surfaces and some steep sections, especially after wet weather.

Portions of the original fortification system remain walkable today, providing views across the surrounding landscape. The site's unusual combination of exploring ruins alongside contemporary metalwork exhibitions creates an unexpected connection between medieval military history and modern craftsmanship.
