Brno City Theatre occupies a three-storey building on Lidická Street with a pale facade and a red tiled roof; silver letters reading "Městské divadlo Brno" stand above the central entryway. It has two stages: a drama stage seating up to 365 and a music stage seating up to 680. The building was a former cinema, reconstructed under director Stanislav Moša.

The theatre originated from the Free Theatre and later became known as the Mrštík Brothers Theatre before moving from St James Square to Lidická Street in 1965. This relocation marked a turning point in becoming a modern performance venue.

The theatre performs in Czech and stages its own productions of world musicals such as Wicked, Les Misérables, Mary Poppins and Matilda, alongside dramas like The School for Basic Living. Its ensemble grew from graduates of Brno's Janáček Academy (JAMU), and actors including Alena Antalová and Petr Gazdík have won Thalia Awards.

The theatre stands on Lidická Street in Brno-střed, with the drama stage in the converted former cinema and the musical stage in the neighbouring building. The walk of fame with actors' handprints lies in front of the drama stage entrance. The two stages have separate entrances, so check which one your performance is in before arriving.

In front of the drama stage stands Brno's own walk of fame, with handprints of the theatre's actors, established in 2000. Several ensemble members have won Thalia Awards, among them Alena Antalová, Radka Coufalová, Stano Slovák and Dušan Vitázek.
