Libochovice Chateau, Baroque chateau in Libochovice, Czech Republic
Libochovice Chateau is a four-wing Baroque palace surrounding a central courtyard with arcades. The complex is complemented by an Italian symmetrical garden featuring four stone fountains.
Italian architect Antonio della Porta transformed the original Gothic fortress into a Baroque residence between 1683 and 1690 for Gundakar of Dietrichstein. This renovation turned it into a symbol of artistic and architectural collaboration between Italian masters and Bohemian nobility.
The interior displays an important collection of tapestries, glass, porcelain, and mythological paintings created by Italian artists including Jacob Tencalla and Giuseppe Mattoni. These artworks define the character of the rooms and reveal the artistic connections between this region and Italy.
The chateau is open to visitors with regular guided tours and is managed by the National Heritage Institute. Before visiting, check the current opening hours and be prepared to explore multiple rooms across the complex.
The chateau houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to Jan Evangelista Purkyně, a renowned Czech scientist who was born in Libochovice in 1787. This exhibition connects the castle's history with the scientific achievements of the region.
