The castle was built in the 14th century and played an important role in Bohemian history, particularly in the early 15th century. It was destroyed in 1438 during a raid and was never rebuilt.
The name refers to the goat herds that once grazed on this hilltop before the castle was built. Visitors can sense this connection between the name and the natural landscape even today.
The castle site sits on a hilltop and is accessible on foot, though visitors should be prepared for the climb. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground is uneven and the ruins lack paved pathways.
Archaeological excavations by Josef Švehla between 1899 and 1914 uncovered artifacts and fragments from different periods. These discoveries are now kept in an exhibition at the Tábor Museum and offer insights into the daily life of the castle's inhabitants.
