Lanšperk Castle, Gothic castle ruin in Lanšperk, Czech Republic.
Lanšperk Castle is a Gothic ruin set on a wooded hilltop near the village of Lanšperk in the Czech Republic. Parts of the outer walls, a gateway section, and some interior structures have survived and are still visible on site.
The castle was founded in the 13th century as a stronghold built to control the surrounding region for local noble families. It changed hands several times over the following centuries before being abandoned and slowly falling into ruin.
The name Lanšperk derives from the German Landsberg, a reminder that the castle was once held by German-speaking nobles. Walking through the remaining walls today, visitors can still make out how the different parts of the complex were separated from one another.
The site is reached on foot along a path with uneven ground, so sturdy shoes are a good idea before setting off. Once at the top, the elevated position offers open views over the surrounding countryside that make the walk worthwhile.
Even though the castle has been abandoned for a long time, some of the original stone thresholds and door frames are still in place. These small details give a direct hint at how the rooms were once entered and used.
