Litice Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Litice nad Orlicí, Czech Republic.
Litice Castle is a castle ruin built on a rocky promontory above the Divoká Orlice river from solid pink granite. Two palace structures remain standing from the original complex, their stone walls rising above the forested surroundings with traces of medieval construction.
Construction began around 1300 when the Drslavic family built the first structures on this rocky site. The castle later came under the control of powerful rulers like John of Bohemia and Charles IV, and underwent major renovations in the mid-15th century.
The stone relief above the pedestrian gate shows King George of Poděbrady with heraldic symbols, reflecting the craft skills of the 15th century. This carving reveals who controlled the castle and the power it held during that era.
Visitors can independently climb the castle tower to enjoy views of Králický Sněžník mountain and surrounding granite quarries. The ascent is steep with uneven paths, so steady footing and solid footwear are helpful for navigating the site safely.
The Drslavic family and later residents of the castle had ties to the Moravian Church, whose members emigrated to America. The castle's name lived on as Lititz, Pennsylvania, the town where this religious community established itself.
