Nóve Hrady Castle, Gothic castle in South Bohemia, Czech Republic
Nóve Hrady Castle is a Gothic castle in southern Bohemia, Czech Republic, with thick stone walls and several towers. The complex brings together building phases from the medieval and Renaissance periods, which is visible in the different sections of walls and structures across the site.
The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century by the Lords of Hradec and served as a key military base in the region. Over time it changed hands among several Bohemian noble families, each of whom added to or altered the complex.
The rooms inside display weapons, furniture, and everyday objects that show how Bohemian nobles lived. The layout follows the old floor plan, so you can get a clear sense of daily life inside a medieval fortress.
Solid shoes are a good idea as paths across the site include cobblestones and stairs, particularly in the older sections. A guided tour helps make sense of the complex since the different building phases can be hard to tell apart without explanation.
A gunpowder explosion in 1573 caused serious damage to the complex and forced extensive repairs. The architects brought in for the work came from Italy, which introduced elements into the structure that you would not typically expect in a Gothic fortress.
