Hrad Návarov, Gothic castle ruin in Železný Brod, Czech Republic
Hrad Návarov is a Gothic castle ruin positioned above the Kamenice River valley, with remaining sections of the western palace wing and an original gate structure still visible. The site spans across uneven terrain where visitors can see how the fortress was laid out and defended.
The fortress was established in the late 13th century as an administrative center for extensive regional lands. It was systematically demolished on orders from Emperor Ferdinand III in the 17th century.
The site reflects how medieval fortifications were designed and controlled the surrounding lands, visible in the remnants of its defensive architecture. People in the region still consider it part of their local heritage and use the trails around it for walking and exploring.
The site is accessible via the red-marked Palacký Trail that connects Podspálov and Tanvald with clear hiking markers along the way. The terrain is uneven and some sections of the ruins are fragile, so sturdy footwear and careful movement are recommended.
A comprehensive restoration project in 2019 stabilized the remaining structures and reinforced them for public access without significantly altering their appearance. This conservation effort allowed the site to be preserved while remaining open to visitors.
