Obřany Castle, Castle ruin in Chvalčov, Czech Republic

Obřany is a medieval castle ruin located on elevated terrain in the Hostýnské vrchy mountains. The remaining stone walls and tower structures clearly show the original layout and defensive positions of the fortress.

The castle was built before 1365 and served as a defensive stronghold for Moravian nobles during the medieval period. Over the centuries, the fortress fell into decline, leaving the remains visible today.

The castle was named after the vanished family seat of Obřany near Brno by its founder Boček of Kunštát and Poděbrady. Below the ruin rises the Táborský and Ondrúšek spring, originally called Hladová studánka, named for the ethnographer František Táborský and the painter František Ondrúšek, who often came here with friends.

The best access is through marked hiking trails leading from the town of Bystřice pod Hostýnem to the ruins. The trails are well signposted, but visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow time for the walk.

The ruin reveals a clear pattern of medieval defensive arrangements typical for this mountain region. Its elevated position allowed the castle to monitor and control large sections of the surrounding valleys.
